Facebook Marketplace Alternatives for Buying and Selling Cars

If you want an alternative to Facebook Marketplace for cars in Costa Rica, CRAutos has a large cars-only inventory, Encuentra24 is a free option with a large audience by its own figures, and PuroCarro is a free option with structured listings and price context. No site removes the risk of fraud, so the precautions in this guide apply wherever you buy or sell.

PuroCarro publishes this guide and is one of the options. Figures were checked on October 2, 2026.

Why people look beyond Marketplace

Marketplace has real strengths: a huge audience, posting in minutes from a phone, the option to share your ad to buy-and-sell groups and, according to third-party guides, no listing fee. Facebook even suggests a price range based on similar local items. Still, there are reasons to look elsewhere:

  • Safety. On May 14, 2025, the OIJ (Costa Rica's judicial investigation police) warned that criminals use fake Facebook profiles to advertise pickups and cars below market value, then rob buyers who show up with cash, sometimes at gunpoint. Recent cases were concentrated in Cartago.
  • Purchase scams. In 2021, the prosecutor's office for fraud and cybercrime listed Marketplace scams and vehicle purchase scams among the three main fraud types it was handling. It flagged suspiciously low prices and fake bank transfer receipts.
  • Unstructured ads. Beyond a handful of fields, each seller writes whatever they like, which makes cars hard to compare.
  • Login required. You need a Facebook account to browse vehicles.

CRAutos

A large cars-only classifieds site: on October 2, 2026 it showed about 11,700 vehicles. Ads require make, model, year, mileage, province and plate number, among other fields, and a basic ad is confirmed by phone before it goes live. Automatic confirmation costs ₡2,260 and a destacado ad ₡9,605. Head-to-head: CRAutos vs Facebook Marketplace.

Encuentra24

Listing a vehicle is free according to the site, and it says its audience is large; in 2026 sponsored content it claims more than 5 million monthly visits across all categories. It is general classifieds, and we could not confirm its photo limits or the price of highlighted ads. See PuroCarro vs Encuentra24.

PuroCarro

A cars-only marketplace. When you list, the plate fills in the vehicle details for you to review, and the site asks for realistic price and mileage. When there are at least 20 similar listings, each ad shows whether its price is in the low, middle or high band of the market, which helps flag a price that looks off, although it does not account for the car's condition or history. Contact happens through on-site chat, and the free plan allows one listing with up to 20 photos. PuroCarro does not inspect cars, and buyers and sellers deal with each other directly, so the precautions below still apply. See PuroCarro vs Facebook Marketplace.

Mercado Libre

Its vehicles section works as classifieds: buyers contact the seller. As of October 2026, the free ad lasts 60 days and paid tiers cost ₡1,500 to ₡5,000, all with 14 photos and video. We could not verify how many cars are listed in Costa Rica.

AutoMarket CR

A new site, free with up to 20 photos. Its ads show a "Placa verificada" (verified plate) badge, but we could not confirm what it checks. When we checked it showed few listings. See PuroCarro vs AutoMarket CR.

Precautions on any site

Switching sites does not protect you on its own. These steps apply on Marketplace and on every alternative:

  • Be wary of bargains. A price far below market is the warning sign both the OIJ and prosecutors mention. Compare against your model's value in the PuroCarro Bluebook.
  • Don't bring cash to the meeting. See the car first and pay through a bank, ideally when you sign before the notary.
  • Check the car at the Registro Nacional. The certificación literal for movable property shows the owner, liens, annotations, infractions and collisions, and you can buy it online at rnpdigital.com.
  • Confirm the transfer. If you are selling, make sure the money is in your account; a receipt is not enough.
  • Get the car checked. Take it to a mechanic you trust before paying. Autopits, for example, launched a free pre-RTV check in 2024; ask whether it's still offered.

When Marketplace still makes sense

If you are selling a lower-priced car and want it gone quickly in your area, Marketplace reaches a lot of people for free. Many sellers use it alongside a specialist site: Marketplace for reach, and a second site with full photos and structured details so buyers can review the car properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to buy a car on Facebook Marketplace?

It can be done with care, but in May 2025 the OIJ warned about fake car ads used to rob buyers carrying cash. Meet somewhere safe, don't bring cash and check the Registro Nacional certification before paying.

Which site is safer than Marketplace for buying a car?

No site removes the risk. Sites with structured listings, such as CRAutos or PuroCarro, make details and prices easier to compare, but checking the car and the seller is still up to you.

How much does it cost to list a car on Facebook Marketplace?

Third-party guides say local listings carry no fee; we could not confirm this on a Meta page for Costa Rica. Encuentra24 and PuroCarro also have free basic listings.

How can I spot a fake car ad?

The signs the OIJ and prosecutors point to are a price far below market, meetings where the buyer is expected to bring cash, and transfer receipts that never show up in the account. Compare the price with similar ads and with the Bluebook.

Can I list on Marketplace and another site at the same time?

Yes. Listing the same car at the same price on Marketplace and a specialist site widens your reach. Take all the ads down once it sells.

Conclusion

Marketplace has a huge audience, but its ads are free-form and it has featured in safety warnings. CRAutos offers a large car inventory, Encuentra24 a free ad with wide reach, and PuroCarro structured listings with price context. On any of them, careful payment and verification are what actually protect you.
