CRAutos vs Facebook Marketplace: Which Should You Use?
Use CRAutos if you want a structured listing in front of buyers who are specifically shopping for cars, and Facebook Marketplace if you want huge free reach and a quick local sale. They are different channels more than direct rivals, and many sellers in Costa Rica use both at once.
PuroCarro publishes this comparison and is neither of the two sites; we mention it at the end as a third option. Figures were checked on October 2, 2026.

Two different ways to find a buyer
CRAutos works like a showroom: buyers arrive intending to shop for a car, filter by make, year, price, province or financing, and compare ads that all follow the same format. On October 2, 2026 it had about 11,700 vehicles listed, 5,484 of them offering financing.
Marketplace works by discovery: your ad reaches people who already use Facebook, even if they weren't shopping for a car that day, and you can share it to buy-and-sell groups. There are no public figures for how many cars are listed there in Costa Rica, but the potential audience is enormous.
Cost
On CRAutos, the publish page shows no price for the basic ad, which waits for a confirmation call. As of October 2026, IVA included:
- Automatic confirmation: ₡2,260.
- "Nuevo" badge for 4 days: ₡2,825.
- Messages such as "GANGA" or "Venta urgente": from ₡5,085.
- Destacado (highlighted): ₡9,605. Super destacado: ₡12,430, which also posts the car on CRAutos' Facebook page, which the site says has more than 112,000 followers.
On Marketplace, third-party guides say local-pickup listings, vehicles included, carry no fee. We could not confirm this on a Meta page for Costa Rica, nor could we confirm what paid reach options exist for car listings.
Listing quality
CRAutos requires make, model, engine size, body style, passengers, year, condition, full price in colones, colours, fuel, transmission, mileage, province, plate number, doors and contact details. Every ad looks the same, which makes comparison easy. The drawback is the 5-photo cap.
On Marketplace, the form asks for year, make, model, mileage, transmission, description and price, and everything else is up to the seller. It is quicker to fill in, but ads vary widely and buyers have a harder time comparing them.
Safety
This is the biggest difference for buyers. On May 14, 2025, the OIJ (judicial investigation police) warned that criminals use fake Facebook profiles to advertise cars and pickups below market value, then rob buyers who arrive with cash, sometimes at gunpoint. In 2021, the fraud prosecutor's office had already listed Marketplace scams and vehicle purchase scams among the main frauds it was handling.
For CRAutos we found no press reports of scams specific to the site. That does not mean the risk is absent: general warnings about scams targeting people selling cars online don't name a platform. On either site, meet somewhere safe, don't carry cash, check the Registro Nacional certification and confirm the money is in the account before handing over the car. The steps are in how to buy a used car in Costa Rica.
For dealers and lots
CRAutos publishes no dealer rates: it says it may cap the number of ads per user and asks agencies to call 2291-4141 about special packages. On Marketplace, Facebook stopped distributing automated dealer inventory catalogues in 2021, according to a US-focused source; we could not confirm how that applies in Costa Rica.
When to choose each
CRAutos, if:
- You want buyers who are already shopping for a car and compare carefully.
- Your car comes with financing or you accept a trade-in.
- You prefer a formal, structured format.
Facebook Marketplace, if:
- You want to post in minutes, for free, from your phone.
- You are selling a lower-priced car and want it gone quickly in your area.
- You are willing to filter a lot of messages.
How to use both
- Set a market price using CRAutos' Bluebook or the PuroCarro Bluebook.
- Post on CRAutos with your 5 best photos and every detail filled in.
- Post on Marketplace at the same price and share it in one or two groups.
- Hold viewings in safe places and confirm any payment in your account.
A third option: PuroCarro
If you want to add a free channel, PuroCarro is a cars-only marketplace with a free plan for one active listing and up to 20 photos. When a listing link is shared on WhatsApp or Facebook it shows the photo, price and details, so it works alongside Marketplace. It has less history and inventory than CRAutos and does not inspect cars. See PuroCarro vs CRAutos and PuroCarro vs Facebook Marketplace.
