PuroCarro vs Facebook Marketplace: Huge Reach or Organised Listings?
If you want as many people as possible to see your car without paying anything, Facebook Marketplace is hard to beat: many people already have an account and posting from your phone takes minutes. If you're buying and want to compare cars on the same details, with real filters and a price reference on every listing, PuroCarro is the more practical tool.
Plenty of sellers use both. What you shouldn't do is use either one without the safety steps further down this page.
What Facebook Marketplace does well
Marketplace is Facebook's buy-and-sell section, and Vehicles is one of its categories. The advantages are real:
- A ready-made audience. Anyone on Facebook can browse and post without opening another account.
- Easy posting. The vehicle form asks for year, make, model, mileage, transmission, description and price, and Facebook suggests a price range to the seller based on similar items nearby.
- Groups. You can also share the listing into buy-and-sell groups.
- Cost. Third-party guides report no listing or selling fee on local-pickup sales, which include vehicles. We couldn't find a Meta page confirming this for Costa Rica specifically.
For a seller who wants lots of enquiries, that counts for a lot.
The catch: it's a social feed, not a car search
Marketplace works like a feed. You have to be logged in to browse it, car ads sit alongside furniture and phones, and beyond the handful of form fields, everything else lives in free text that each seller writes their own way. Comparing ten Hiluxes on equal terms takes a while.
PuroCarro starts from the car's data instead.
- Vehicle filters. Make, model, year, price, fuel, transmission, body type, mileage and location, plus map search.
- Saved searches with alerts. Daily, weekly, immediate or scheduled, depending on your plan, so you don't have to keep scrolling a feed.
- Your own lists to group and compare cars you're considering.
- Plate assist when listing: the car's details fill in from the plate and are marked so the seller can check them.
Price: who gets the reference
On Facebook, the price suggestion goes to the seller when they post. On PuroCarro, the comparison is shown to the buyer on every listing: the price is compared with up to 50 similar listings from the last 12 months, and a bar shows whether it falls in the cheapest 25%, the middle or the most expensive 25%. The cheapest get a "Below average" label.
That also helps with something the authorities keep flagging: prices too low to be real. The comparison only appears when there are at least 20 similar listings, it ignores condition and history, and a low price doesn't prove something is wrong any more than a normal price proves everything is fine. For a general lookup by make, model and year, use the Bluebook.

Safety: what the OIJ has warned about
On 14 May 2025, Teletica reported an OIJ warning: criminals use fake Facebook profiles to advertise cars and pickups below market value, arrange a meeting, and rob buyers who show up with cash, mostly dollars, in some cases at gunpoint. Recent cases were concentrated in Cartago.
This isn't new. In July 2021 the Fiscalía de Fraudes listed Marketplace buy-and-sell scams and vehicle buy-and-sell scams among the three most common fraud types it was handling. It warned about suspiciously low prices and fake transfer receipts, and advised checking the Registro Nacional.
To be clear: PuroCarro does not verify sellers and can't prevent a scam. In-site chat and structured listings keep the conversation organised, but every precaution in this section applies just as much to a car you find on PuroCarro as to one on Facebook or anywhere else.
Buying a car you found online, safely
Before you go
- Be suspicious of bargains. Check the price against the Bluebook or similar listings. If it's far below, ask why before you travel.
- Get the plate and pull a Literal Rápida de Bienes Muebles at rnpdigital.com. It shows the registered owner, liens, annotations, infractions and collisions. If the owner's name doesn't match the person selling, ask for an explanation in writing.
- Check for unpaid fines with COSEVI (csv.go.cr).
At the viewing
- Bring someone, go in daylight, and meet in a busy public place. Don't accept last-minute location changes or offers to pick you up.
- Don't carry cash, either to the viewing or the signing.
- Get it inspected. In 2024 Autopits launched a free pre-RTV check covering brakes, steering, suspension, lights, battery, emissions and tyres; ask whether it's still offered. Treat it as a first screen, not a substitute for a mechanic you trust.
When you pay
- Do the transfer (traspaso) before a notary, with the title, marchamo and RTV up to date. If the price is over $10,000, the buyer must provide a source-of-funds declaration.
- Pay by bank transfer and confirm the money has landed before keys change hands. A receipt on a phone screen is not proof of payment.

When Facebook Marketplace makes more sense
- You want the most eyes on your car at no cost.
- Your car is in high demand and you expect lots of quick enquiries.
- You're already active in local buy-and-sell groups.
When PuroCarro is the better choice
- You're buying and want to filter by fuel, body type, mileage and location at once.
- You want alerts when the car you're looking for appears, instead of scrolling a feed.
- You want to see how each listing's price compares with similar cars.
- You want your listing to have its own Google-indexed page that people can open without a Facebook account.
- You'd rather ask your first questions through the site's chat.
The best of both: list on PuroCarro and share the link on Marketplace and in your groups. When shared, Facebook and WhatsApp show the car's photo, price and details, and interested buyers find all the photos and the price comparison in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to buy a car on Facebook Marketplace in Costa Rica?
It can be, with care. In May 2025 the OIJ warned about fake cheap-car ads used to rob buyers who arrive with cash. Check the plate at the Registro Nacional, meet in a public place, don't carry cash, and pay by confirmed bank transfer during the notary transfer.
How much does it cost to sell a car on Facebook Marketplace?
Third-party guides report no fee for local vehicle listings. We couldn't find a Meta page confirming this for Costa Rica. On PuroCarro, the Pura Vida plan is free with 1 active listing, and the optional Boost costs $7 for 7 days.
Does PuroCarro verify sellers?
No. PuroCarro doesn't verify sellers, inspect cars or handle payments. It offers structured listings, in-site chat and a price comparison, but you should run the same checks as with any private sale.
How can I tell if a car on Facebook is too cheap?
Look up the make, model and year in the PuroCarro Bluebook and check similar listings and their comparison bars. A price far below the normal range is one of the warning signs the Fiscalía de Fraudes asks buyers to take seriously.
Can I list my car on PuroCarro and Facebook at the same time?
Yes, and they work well together. List on PuroCarro and share the link on Marketplace and in groups; the preview shows the photo, price and details.
Verdict
Facebook Marketplace wins on reach and ease of posting, and for many sellers that's enough. For buyers, a feed of free-text listings and the risk of fake ads make it slower and riskier. PuroCarro puts every listing on the same footing and gives buyers a price reference, though it doesn't remove the need to check the plate, meet safely and pay by confirmed transfer. Listing on PuroCarro and sharing the link on Facebook gets you both.
