PuroCarro vs Pura Autos: Same Idea, Different Details
If you want prices shown in both dollars and colones, sharing to X, email or SMS, and an English-language blog for expats, Pura Autos is worth using. If you want a free plan that sits on a published price list, price context on every listing, chat with sellers and alerts for new matches, PuroCarro is the better fit.
The names are close enough to confuse, and they are separate companies. PuroCarro (purocarro.com) is operated by Timechain LLC. Pura Autos (puraautos.com) is a different site. On paper the two offer a similar set of tools, so this page looks at how each one works in practice.
What Pura Autos offers, as of October 2026
Pura Autos is a bilingual classifieds site for private sellers and dealers, in English with a Spanish version. Its footer reads "©2023-2026 Pura Autos" with a support email address; no legal entity or street address is shown.
- Cost to list: free. The homepage says private sellers and dealerships can list for free "for a limited time", describing the offer as worth over 10,000 CRC or $20. The sell page says registration and listing are free. It does not say what listing will cost after the offer ends.
- Search: make (over 60), model, budget in colones or dollars, year range, mileage, province, body style, transmission, drive type, fuel, exterior colour and keyword.
- Listing cards: year, mileage, transmission, fuel, location, and the price in both USD and ₡.
- Extras: a free price analysis, a "Costa Rica Blue Book" of car values, a daily report of new listings, sharing to Facebook, X, email and SMS, and an English blog aimed at expats.
- Inventory: its search page listed more than 15,000 autos in early October 2026. We could not determine how many of those are still for sale, so confirm availability with the seller before you go to see a car.

Where the two really differ
What "free" means
Both sites let a private seller list for nothing today. The difference is how firm that is. PuroCarro's free tier, Pura Vida, is one of four entries on the public pricing page, next to the paid plans and the $7 Boost. Pura Autos describes free listing as a limited-time offer and does not publish what comes next. If you are a dealer planning a year of listings, that uncertainty matters more than it does for a private seller with one car.
How the price check works
Both sites offer a price reference, and both have a "blue book". The question is what sits behind them.
PuroCarro publishes its method. Each listing's price is compared with up to 50 similar listings from the last 12 months: same make, similar model, up to 2 years and 50,000 km apart. Older listings are added only if there are not enough. Other currencies are converted at the exchange rate and outliers are excluded. The bar appears only when there are at least 20 similar listings, and shows the lowest 25%, middle 50% and top 25%. It does not account for condition, extras, maintenance or history. The PuroCarro Bluebook gives the min, max, average and median price plus mileage stats by make, model and year, drawn from PuroCarro listings.
We have not reviewed how Pura Autos calculates its price analysis or Blue Book, so we make no claim about its method. Use the questions below to judge either one.
Contact and follow-up
On PuroCarro, buyers message sellers through chat on the site and can save searches with alerts (daily, weekly, immediate or scheduled, depending on plan) and group cars into custom lists to compare. Pura Autos' strengths are elsewhere: dual-currency prices on every card and more sharing channels.
When Pura Autos makes sense
- You think in dollars and want every price shown in both currencies.
- You read the English expat blog and want listings in the same place.
- You are a dealer happy to take free listings while the offer lasts.
- You want to share a car by SMS or X as well as Facebook.
When PuroCarro is the better choice
- You want a free plan that is part of a published price list, not a time-limited offer.
- You want price context on the listing itself, with the method spelled out.
- You want chat with sellers, map search and alerts when a matching car is listed.
- You want to pay $7 for one week of extra visibility instead of a subscription.
- You want to check a car's marchamo by plate before you call.
Five questions to ask any "blue book" or price check
PuroCarro's Bluebook is built from listings, so it reflects asking prices rather than final sale prices. Before you trust any price tool, on any site:
- Where does the data come from? The site's own listings, other sites, or something else?
- How similar are the comparisons? Same make and model only, or a wider bracket of years and mileage?
- How recent is the data? A window of 12 months reflects today's market better than an open-ended archive.
- How many cars is it based on? A median from five listings is not a market value. A tool should say when it does not have enough data.
- Does it handle currency and outliers? Mixed dollar and colón prices and placeholder prices (₡1, ₡8) distort an average unless they are converted and filtered.
Then remember what no tool can see: condition, accident history and liens. For those, get a mechanic's inspection and a Literal Rápida from the Registro Nacional.

Verdict
Pura Autos and PuroCarro cover much of the same ground: bilingual, free for private sellers today, with value tools for buyers. Pura Autos does better on dual-currency display and sharing channels. PuroCarro offers a free plan on a published price list, a documented price comparison on every listing, chat and alerts.
