PuroCarro vs Mercado Libre: Where Should You List Your Car in Costa Rica?

If you want inexpensive paid plans and video on your ad, Mercado Libre Costa Rica is a serious option: its vehicle plans run from ₡1,500 to ₡5,000 and every tier includes 14 photos plus video. If you'd rather use a cars-only site with up to 20 free photos and a price comparison buyers see on every listing, PuroCarro is the better fit.

One thing worth clearing up first: you don't buy a car on Mercado Libre with a cart and checkout. Vehicles work as classifieds. The buyer contacts the seller and they negotiate directly, the same as on PuroCarro.

How Mercado Libre works for vehicles in Costa Rica

Mercado Libre operates locally as MercadoLibre Costa Rica S.R.L., and mercadolibre.co.cr has a vehicles category with its own section for cars, motorcycles and more. According to its buyer help page, you call the seller if they've published a phone number, or message them through the questions section.

The same page describes filters for make, model, new or used, dealer, price, location, mileage and year. It's an old page, so treat that as a guide: we couldn't check the current search because the site sent us to an account-verification wall.

What we couldn't confirm is how many cars are listed on Mercado Libre Costa Rica right now. The section exists and is priced, but we couldn't see its inventory. If you're buying, check it yourself.

What it costs to list a car on Mercado Libre

From the "Costos de vender un vehículo" help page, as of October 2026:

Oro Premium₡5,000Very highUntil it sells
  • Every plan includes 14 photos and video.
  • On paid plans, if the car hasn't sold after 60 days, you can republish it for free.
  • Oro Premium adds free republishing for a year, only for vehicles 2+ years old and only within 30 days of the ad ending.

Check the price when you list. Another Mercado Libre Costa Rica help page, written after the IVA reform, shows different figures: Oro Premium ₡5,650, Oro ₡2,599, Plata ₡1,695, and a 30-day free plan. Neither page is dated. The table above looks like the current one, but confirm before you pay.

Where Mercado Libre is stronger

  • Cheap paid plans. ₡1,500 to ₡5,000, lasting until the car sells. For reference, a featured ad on CRAutos costs ₡9,605.
  • Video on every plan, including the free one. For a car where the engine sound or the interior is a selling point, that's a real advantage.
  • A well-known brand across the region, with a locally registered company.

Where PuroCarro is different

More photos on the free plan. Up to 20, against 14. Six extra shots cover tyres, the boot, paperwork and close-ups of the paint.

Price context for buyers. Each PuroCarro listing compares its price with up to 50 similar listings from the last 12 months (same make, similar model, within 2 years and 50,000 km). A bar shows whether it sits in the cheapest 25%, the middle 50% or the most expensive 25%, and the cheapest carry a "Below average" label. It only appears with at least 20 comparable listings, and it ignores condition and history. If your car is well priced, that label works in your favour.

Search built for cars. Fuel, transmission, body type, mileage and location filters, map search, saved searches with alerts, and lists for comparing cars.

Plate assist. You type the plate and the car's details fill in, marked so you can check them.

Which works out cheaper for you

One car, no rush. Both are free. Mercado Libre's free ad lasts 60 days at low exposure. PuroCarro's Pura Vida plan gives you 1 active listing with up to 20 photos. Listing on both costs nothing.

One car, more visibility. On Mercado Libre, Oro costs ₡2,300 and runs until the car sells. On PuroCarro, Boost costs $7 for 7 days and puts your listing at the top of the homepage, and you can extend it 7 days at a time. If you expect to sell within a few weeks, either is cheap. If the car could take months, Mercado Libre's run-until-sold plan comes out ahead.

Two or three cars at once. Mercado Libre allows only one free listing at a time, so each extra car needs a paid plan, from ₡1,500 each. On PuroCarro, Turbo is $9.99 a month ($8.33 a month billed yearly) for 5 active listings, and you can cancel any time.

A lot or dealership. We couldn't confirm dealer plans on Mercado Libre Costa Rica. On PuroCarro, Empresarial is $99.99 a month for 100 active listings and includes a business banner. Details are on the pricing page.

When Mercado Libre makes more sense

  • You want video on your ad.
  • Your car may take a while to sell and you'd rather pay once for a plan that lasts until it does.
  • You already sell on Mercado Libre and know the platform.

When PuroCarro is the better choice

  • You want more photos without paying.
  • You want buyers to see how your price compares with similar cars.
  • You're selling several cars at once and prefer a flat monthly fee.
  • You're buying and want car-only filters, alerts and map search.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to list a car on Mercado Libre Costa Rica?

As of October 2026, its help centre lists a free 60-day plan (one listing at a time) and paid plans of ₡1,500 (Plata), ₡2,300 (Oro) and ₡5,000 (Oro Premium), which run until the car sells. Another help page shows different prices, so confirm when you list.

Can I pay for a car online through Mercado Libre?

According to the help page we found, it doesn't work like a cart purchase: the buyer calls or messages the seller and they negotiate directly. We found no source saying vehicle payments go through the platform in Costa Rica.

How many photos does Mercado Libre allow for vehicles?

Every plan includes 14 photos and video. PuroCarro allows up to 20 photos on any plan, including the free one.

Are there many cars on Mercado Libre Costa Rica?

We couldn't verify that. The vehicles section exists and has published prices, but we weren't able to check its current inventory. Look for yourself before deciding where to search.

Can I list my car on Mercado Libre and PuroCarro at the same time?

Yes. Both have a free option for one listing. Use the same price on both and take both down when the car sells.

Verdict

Mercado Libre Costa Rica has inexpensive paid plans that last until the car sells and includes video on all of them, which suits a private seller with one car and some patience. PuroCarro gives you more photos at no cost, a clear monthly fee if you sell several cars, and a price comparison buyers see on every listing. For a private seller, listing on both is free, so there's little reason to pick just one. List your car on PuroCarro.
